With extensive experience in quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and forensic failure analysis, FloorSciences™ partners with our clients nationwide to prevent and solve complex issues related to commercial and industrial floor coverings, coatings, and concrete slabs utilizing science, technology, and professional expertise. We take pride in maintaining a national reputation for a high level of professional excellence and objectivity to provide reliable data and solutions.

FloorSciences™ consults on new construction, renovation, and forensic failure projects nationwide during the pre-installation, installation, and post-installation phases of projects. We are nationally recognized as a leading concrete floor testing and forensic inspections agency. Our reports are thorough and include accurate data. We correlate this reliable data to support unbiased, informed, scientific conclusions and opinions.

FloorSciences™ takes commercial and industrial floor consulting to the next level with advanced technical capabilities that includes a wide range of analytical testing and evaluation services available from very few flooring inspection companies. Some of our advanced technology includes:
🔸High-tech electronic ultrasonic coating thickness gage utilized to non-destructively and accurately measure the dry film thickness (DFT) of coatings on concrete, including moisture mitigation coatings.

🔸High-tech electronic and optical precision metrology instruments utilized in the measurements of flooring products and gaps.

🔸High-tech electronic Durometer utilized in the measurement of the hardness (Shore A or Shore D) of a floor covering or floor coating.

🔸High-tech electronically controlled hydraulic pull testing device utilized to determine the tensile bond strength of underlayments and coatings to concrete slabs and other cementitious substrates; and the tensile strength of the concrete slab surface.

🔸High-tech ground penetrating radar (GPR) concrete subsurface scanning utilized to nondestructively locate post-tensioning cables, rebar, conduit, pipes, and other embeddings in concrete slabs prior to drilling or coring a concrete slab.

🔸High-tech GPR concrete subsurface scanning utilized to nondestructively measure concrete slab thickness.

Accurate ASTM F2170 internal relative humidity (RH) concrete moisture testing requires accurate concrete slab thickness measurements at each test location to test at a specific (20 or 40%) slab depth.

The ASTM F2170 standard requires the bottom of the test holes and sleeves to be within a tight tolerance of the specific percentage of the concrete slab thickness. Without accurate concrete thickness measurements, in situ relative humidity (RH) concrete testing does not conform to the ASTM F2170 standard and could provide inaccurate data which can result in flooring failures and compromise flooring product warranties.

It is believed in the industry that most testing is performed using an assumed slab thickness and usually all tests on a project are based on that potentially false assumption when there can be significant variations of thickness within a concrete slab.

FloorSciences™ believes accuracy matters so using advance technology, we measure the concrete slab thickness at each test location.

Issues that can be Caused by Excessive Concrete Moisture and pH Levels

Excessive concrete moisture and pH levels cause more failures of floor coverings, concrete coatings, underlayments, and toppings than any other factor aside from installation defects.  When these levels exceed manufacturers' product limitations, it can manifest to include potential symptoms and issues such as:
  • Adhesive breakdown & re-emulsification
  • Alkali attacks
  • Blistering
  • Blushing of color
  • Bond failures
  • Bubbling
  • Cleanliness & sanitation issues
  • Cracking
  • Crazing
  • Damp areas
  • Delamination
  • Discoloration
  • Efflorescence
  • Gaps
  • Indoor air quality (IAQ) and "sick building syndrome" issues
  • Microbial growth (bacteria, fungi, mold, mildew)
  • Pop-outs
  • Scaling
  • Spalling
  • Staining
  • Trip & fall hazards
  • Uneven walking surfaces
  • Voiding of flooring components warranties
  • Warping
